Joanne Young at Confident Writing presents a group writing project devoted to celebrating writers’ best work of 2008, “Simply the Best.” My contribution is An Independence Day Reflection: “Eeny, meeny, miny, moe …” which is “simply the best” writing I did this year, in my estimation, because it is a personal reflection upon what growing up in a quintessential small American town was like. As we enter a new year and new era in American leadership, it is appropriate to remind ourselves that “America is a promise, not a product. The American dream — however you define it — is ever-evolving, adapting to societal changes, adjusting as we become more knowledgeable about and appreciative of our differences.”
