I am probably one of the few Catholics in California who opposes Proposition 8. I have been shunned by my entire family of rich, prosperous Catholics who want to control the lives of other people and force them to turn to our religion. I don't have an exact biblical quotes or anything, but I'm pretty sure there were some homosexuals around the time of Jesus. Yes, my religion acknowledges homeosexuality as sin, but in the last century catholics who have nothing better to do with their selves want to take away constitutional rights to other people and claim that they are doing it in "the name of god". Well I think that politics and religion should stay separate because that is the start of conflict. I know that not everyone wants to believe in what I believe in and that there is strong evidence that my God doesn't exist. We Catholics can't tell people that they have false gods if any other human can prove mine false. I have personal reasons to believe. Now, I also want to point out that many "religious" folks would do anything to take away the rights of others. Many claim that they want "world peace" (in fact, every Sunday my priest talks about this and we are forced to sing this), but taking a right that makes two people with different characteristics unequal is a direct contradiction of peace. I'm ashamed to share the same faith os these hypocrites. As a black male, I attend a mostly white Church (because its close). I get disrespected and am treated differently than others. In church they woiuld preach about peace and love, but outside of church they treat me like I'm next to nothing. And these same people preach against war and abortion, but support the death sentence.

Sorry for that rant. I support rights for everyone of different races, ideologies, and different orientations. This might seem shocking to most, but it is a medium for black males to be against KKK (for obvious reasons). Although I am against what they stand for, I still think they deserve a right to express their opinions, because if I didn't this would be an example of bigotry. If you are religious like I am and are reading this, I just want to say that I am not a "devil" just because I am against elitism or I don't agree with Catholic Political statements, I just realize when people are doing the wrong thing. Earth and Heaven are different, and according to the bible, only God judges who goes where. I believe that regardless of what a person believes in, if he or she tries to lead an example in life of doing the right thing, he will prosper in the afterlife. And telling others that "gays are possesed by demons" and all that nonsense is judging others as you were their god and you decided what would happen with them. Just live your life, and try to make the world a more "equal" place for the next few generations to come. Be open and tolerate views of others.

Living in the UK, I'm slightly envious of the practice in the US of voting on specific laws. It seems a very democratic way of doing things. But in situations like this, it does make me realise how open it is to bigotry and scare-mongering. I'm sure if there was a vote on same-sex marriage here, the result would be similar to that on Proposition 8.

On a happier note, thanks to everyone who helped elect a president with a greater understanding of worldwide issues.

That’s akin to the “separate but equal” approach to education for children with different skin colors that was invalidated by the United States Supreme Court in Brown v. Board of Education 347 U.S. 483 (1954).

Correct. A perfect analogy. You spoke what many bloggers all over the nation have on their hearts and minds this week. Excellent BlogBlast post! I enjoyed reading your professional and passionate opinion on this issue.

Thank you for participating and making your voice count
Peace to you and yours,
Mimi
