OK, for me the means to authenticity is established when I first set up my blogs: I make sure that each of them involve subjects in which I have an interest. My writing may not always be a product of 'Inspiration', but I usually succeed in avoiding writing about things that would bore me, and I count that as a victory of sorts. I think the reader feels the level of engagement one brings to the post/article, certainly.
That sort of writing funds the Inspiration anyway, doesn't it?
Anyway, as I say, this happens when I determine the subject matter/scope of a blog, at the very beginning. I won't make writing into a job by writing about things that don't interest me! I think I do have an especially wide range of interests, luckily....

The writing should be original and unique. A true and professional writer never copies content nor steals ideas from other sources.

I recently had a reader leave a comment saying that she didn't like the way my site had changed, although she didn't elaborate on what that meant. I just feel like, hey, I write what I want--if you like it, come back and let's talk, and if you don't, well, there are lots of other blogs out there.

Of course I want communication and dialogue with my readers, and I do have that with lots of other readers all while writing things I enjoy--and for me that's the bottom line. If it ain't fun, I ain't doing it anymore. And if I have to take into account the specific interests of this reader and that reader, well, chances are, that won't be fun for me. Is that selfish? If so, so be it.

Like you, Janie, my blog isn't a huge money-making machine, so if it isn't fun for me, what's the point? And won't that show in my writing anyway? I'm *terrible* writing things I don't enjoy!

Love your mission statement :)

I have couple of blogs and for me authentic is writing my life's experience. like in my tech blog I don't publish posts until I have experimented well with those stuffss..

In my relationship management blog where I talk about girls I don't write anything unless I have experimented that with my girl friend :)

I do share it with her that I experimented something on her as I had to update my blog. She first grumbles but later understands it easily..

Powerful question, and I like the idea of having a Mission statement for your blog, of the 3 I have two I am 100% aware of where they are to go for me, and why I write them, but my original....frequently I question why do I do it. Makes me think, thanks for a provocative piece.

I must admit that I do blogs to augment my income. Indeed I have thought if this is still the art of writing...and I came to the realization that it is not...So I keep my own site, free from any financial intentions, where I write anything I want. It feels like throwing my thoughts in the vast universe without knowing if anybody can hear...and I could not care less...this to me is writing authentically...

Thank you for sharing my post, Janie. I agree that "authentic" is a bit of a buzzword in this day and age, but it seemed most appropriate to my message.

Your mission statement is beautiful and well suited to a blog about writing.

This is a very interesting read. To answer the question writing authentically means speaking from your own mind. It's writing down the words that appear in your head and not what you pick up from others. You must be able to form a thought or opinion that is truly and honestly your own. You must be able to convey those thoughts and opinions to others while still being unique.

I'm a fairly new blogger so I haven't had that blogging crisis but I'm sure it's going to come at some point. I have the standard disclosure policy stating my blog will have some paid advertising but the true mission of my blog is just for me to have an outlet to speak about whatever I want.
