Its true that while the depth of feelings in our relationships may be the same as that of our parents, we rarely take the time to put in down on paper in verse or even regular letters. In a way it is sad that videos and photos should replace the written word so completely in our lives.

The John Adams miniseries was fabulous. I posted some of my thoughts on a it a couple of weeks ago. I recently read that Abigail's letters are one of the few historic documents that detail what women were going through as our country was forming.

When my children were babies (they are 5 now), I created a scrapbook for each of them that has the values my husband and I want them to live by. I read it to them occasionally. I felt this compulsion to get those words on paper quickly so that if I die they will know what I traits and characteristic I value most in life. Also, I have kept journals most of my life. Because I have these, I feel like when I die my ancestors will have a fairly accurate account of my life.

I think if I knew I only had one week to live, I would want to write something that expresses my love for my family and how each person in the family has meant to me in my life.

My wife and I have also enjoyed John Adams. I hand-wrote letters for years when I was younger, but I think the instant gratification of email and text message have taken much of the considered thought and depth out of the process.

All that said, with one week left, I would assemble my letters (I still have most of them and/or responses) and my college-day audio diary recordings for my wife & kids to read and listen to one day. Many embarrassing things in both, I'm sure, but I would hope that both would allow my family to travel back to my younger days and see things from my perspective at the time.

That's a very difficult question. Having a blog is my version of writing letters to the future, but my missives are very abstract and probably won't make much sense to anyone else. It's certainly not the insightful chronicling that the Adams did. Can anyone sum up a life in one week? Probably not, so it's an undertaking best started before getting such fateful news.
