Sorry, I disagree here. Whilst I won't use certain words out of respect for other people I don't think knowing you have a large audience from a particular country ought to be the guiding premise as to what you should or shouldn't publish. I don't get your gun laws and would criticise them knowing I would put off NRA members. We should recognise that there are different standards in different countries and at the end of the day it is the audience that has the power because they can switch off if they wish.

I can't comment on the specifics of this article because I haven't seen the original context, so will have to take your word that it is "gender-specific hate speech".

Angel: If that were a defense, I would be out of business. (I'm a civil rights attorney.) 99% of workplace harassment, for instance, is perpetrated by people who didn't mean to "purposely offend people," but do so via their inappropriate conduct. It's not a justification.

As I said in my article, I am of the opinion that writers need to know their audience. The blogger in question knew that he has a vast United States audience and should have tempered his comments accordingly.

Moreover, as to why he wrote the article . . . I could have written that article using at least 100 other words that would not have offended the readers and made the point just as effectively. It goes back to my belief that talented and skillful writers don't need vulgarity to make a point.

The point is, however, that he didn't write it to purposely offend people. Yes, the author has a responsibility to be aware of his audience, but you have to look at why the word was used in the first place.

And also, Cow has a wife?

I "gave consideration" to that fact, but don't consider it a justification for using gender-specific hate speech on a blog that is largely read by an American audience. That's why I made clear that I believe authors have a responsibility to know their audiences!

I find it amusing that you talk about variances in language usage between different cultures but you're not willing to give consideration to the fact that where "JC" is from that's simply a common term of "endearment". If you consider that fact that the blog in question is run by a man and a wife I'm even more amazed at your reaction to it. That said I agree that had it been an INTENDED attack on anyone then it is beyond repulsive. As is it was simply used for emphasis. As for my own blog. Sometimes I use "strong" words on it, but I make an effort to keep it to a minimum. I admit I've never thrown out the dread ______, because in my culture unlike Mr. ___ it is offensive, crass, in poor taste, etc, etc, etc.A Blog about Nothing's last blog post..Iâ??m the proud â??pappaâ?? of a bouncing baby Page Rank!

I tend not to use it when I write but have been known to drop the odd magic word when with a group of mates. I am always conscious of my audience be it the reader or the person in the street who may happen to walk by.

You are right though, there are cultural differences, and here in Australia we probably tend too far towards the profane as a general comment. I won't necessarily blackban someone for swearing but in lots of cases excessive profanity if not offensive is at the very least boring.

Hey even I am fond of “The Sopranos.” And far as foul language is concerned I feel they need to use sometimes to give it a reality touch. Which is Ok.
