If bad didn't exist, then good wouldn't exist. We couldn't comprehend it. Think about it. If you wanted to get rid of evil, how far would you go? Banish murder only, or go as far as banishing paper-cuts and mild indigestion?

I suppose this is partly what the Fall of Man means, and 'the knowledge of good and evil'. Paradise was a kindergarten, a nursery, and you can't be a baby forever.
Nice, but you learn nothing. Nothing changes.

Also, God permits the possibility of evil, but I've read that Man's actions, and Karma, are the cause of most of it.

An advanced soul, a saint, could choose to have a delightful incarnation, free from pain. The paradox is that he would not so choose, as he would want to get even closer to God, by paying off more Karma, and, by suffering, help others get nearer to God also.

You can tell I believe in reincarnation; I don't think one lifetime is long enough, for most people, to get good enough to enter the immediate presence of God after the death of the body.

T.: I don't believe that bad has to exist in order for good to have meaning, nor do I subscribe to the theory that God "lets" bad things happen. Bad things happen because this is an imperfect world. If God "let" bad things happen, I would cease to be a person of faith because I could never believe in or worship a God that "let" so much suffering take place.

As for wearing out . . . I don't know. My grandparents lived to be 90 and 89.5. My grandfather was called "senile" and suffered strokes, but these days the diagnosis might have been Alzheimer's. My grandmother, however, was perfectly lucid until just a few days before her death. So I think there is probably a genetic component. Could be that my mother inherited her father's gene for Alzheimer's. Additionally, her lifestyle in her later years made her vulnerable, in my opinion. She spent far too much time alone because she refused to get out and interact with others. Would not participate in activities & I could not spend every minute of every day with her. I spoke to her on the phone nearly every day and saw her every weekend, plus some evenings, but the rest of the time she did not keep her mind active as she had in previous years, in part because of her failing eyesight and in part because of her personality -- after my father died, she would not socialize. So the answers are neither simple nor completely knowable.

Why does God let bad things happen? Well, consider a world where nothing bad ever happened; it would be meaningless, and dull. For great good to exist, great evil must also exist.

As to your mother's condition: this is the result of excellent medical care, diet, and modern healthy living. We now live long enough for strange wasting illnesses to kill us; we wear out.

If it's any comfort, what we suffer pays off Karma; it has value in that sense.

Personally, I've never found the concept of morning prayer in a public institution to be appropriate, and I'd skip it, too, but that's really not the point.

There is, indeed, some humor here, and there are valid points in the lawsuit made, though there are far better, less expensive ways to make those points, without abusing a position of public trust.

I enjoyed reading your thoughts.
