Thirteen Movie Recommendations

Looking to beat the heat by relaxing with a DVD for a couple of hours this weekend? You might want to consider some of the following films that I have enjoyed and would watch again or, in some cases, again and again and again . . .

  1. Romantic comedy: “Must Love Dogs” or “Shall We Dance”
  2. Historical Drama: “Sophie’s Choice,” “Anne of the Thousand Days,” “The Man in the Iron Mask” (Richard Chamberlain t.v. from the 1970’s or Jeremy Irons film version — both are very good) or “The Count of Monte Cristo” (again, the Richard Chamberlain t.v. version from the early 1970’s is a classic, but the Jim Caveziel film is also excellent)
  3. Drama: “The Queen” or “Notes on a Scandal”
  4. Heist: “Heat” or “Oceans 11″
  5. Legal Drama: “The Verdict,” “A Civil Action” or “Erin Brockovich”
  6. Drama with a Social Conscience: “The Insider”
  7. Biography: “Hollywoodland” or “Capote”
  8. Comedy: “Little Miss Sunshine,” “Meet the Parents,” “Napoleon Dynamite,” “Raising Arizona,” “A Fish Called Wanda,” or BigBob’s favorite, “I Love You to Death.”
  9. Action: “Raiders of the Lost Ark” or “Pirates of the Caribbean”
  10. Inspirational: “Chariots of Fire”
  11. Mystery: “The Sixth Sense” or “The Skeleton Key”
  12. I Just Want to Have A Good Cry: “An Affair to Remember” or “The Way We Were”
  13. Guaranteed to Make Men Leave the Room: “Sense and Sensibility” or “Pride and Prejudice” (A&E version is better than the film)

Bonus Category — TV to DVD: “Rescue Me,” “Into the West,” “Big Love,” “Six Feet Under,” “The Shield,” “The Closer” or, of course, “The Sopranos.”
