If it is really a clique, they probably are run out of sight of the search engines, with a password to view. That way, you wouldn't get 'commoners and undesireables'. And, we wouldn't even know those ones existed. Other times, it is just people with similar views and experiences connecting. There may be a bit of a clique-ish tendency, but I am not sure it is the same as it is in high school. I think you are right that there is a limited number of people that we can communicate with and still continue with our lives.
